Big Blocks of Stone.
Sculptors with Chisels.
Six Weeks of Creativity

The Saint Paul College Lawn
Kellogg Blvd at Summit Avenue

An Event of Global Proportions

From mid-May through June of 2006, fourteen master stone sculptors from around the world and Minnesota will gather in Saint Paul to create artworks from Minnesota stone. Working on the lawn of Saint Paul College at the highly visible intersection of Kellogg Boulevard and Summit Avenue, they will shine a public spotlight on the ancient art of stone carving.

International amity will be fostered as these artists from Japan, Germany, China, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Finland, Italy, and Minnesota share their unique creative perspectives and cultural traditions as they bring forth sculptures from this vital Minnesota resource.   The resulting artworks will be permanently installed in public places in Saint Anthony, Vadnais Heights, and throughout Saint Paul.

Minnesota Rocks!

Minnesota holds some of the earth's oldest and most beautiful and valuable stone. Known as "rainbow granite", Morton gneiss from the southwest corner of the state is over 3.5 billion years old. Younger granites in colors ranging from black and grey to red and pink are deep in the earth around St. Cloud, while limestone and dolomite are quarried around Mankato and in the Mississippi River Valley.   Minnesota stone is the prized material of architectural and artistic treasures all over the nation and the world.

Exploring our Rocky Roots

The Symposium's tours, special programs and media features will allow the public to explore world geology and the stone wonders of our Capital City.   Through curriculum trunks and field trips, over 6,000 students in Saint Paul Public School science, history, literature, art and cultural studies classes will learn of stone's marvelous and varied character and how it has built buildings and economies, bridges and artworks, legends and myths from the stone age to the space age.
