Education
Oh those stones! They can skip on the water, they can scratch on the sidewalk! It feels so good to hold them in hand, or kick them along the street, or pick them up along the shore.

Children know this about rocks. That innate curiosity and sheer joy in a primal material is a door to understanding earth science, the building of civilizations and economies, and the making of art. Through Minnesota Rocks!, Public Art Saint Paul and Saint Paul Public Schools are opening the door for students to explore paths of learning that cross the bounds of science, culture and creativity.

Overall, the Minnesota Rocks! Education Project is expected to impact 6000 Saint Paul students. It has been supported with grants from the 3M and St. Paul Travelers Foundations

(to the tune of Jingle Bell Rock)

Pyrrohotite, hematite, magnetite,
taconite and thomsonite,
minerals are many billions years old
that’s the Minnesota ROCKS!

Gneiss, peat, clay;
sand and gravel,
doesn’t it just make you wanna travel,
come to Minnesota,
and see the rocks,
that’s the Minnesota ROCKS!!!

Agate, limestone, greenstone,
granite and quartize and sandstone,
gabbro and lava -SS bedrock too,
that’s the Minnesota ROCKS!!!!

Students in Juliana James’ 3rd grade at Frost Lake School are singing this song about rocks. They will perform it at the opening ceremony, May 21, 3PM, and on May 26 at the symposium site.
